How did you get started in this field and come to work for TI Source?
I was 8-years-old when I drew my first restaurant. At the same time, I was using graph paper to redesign my living room with notes and dimensions. Looking back, it probably should have been obvious where my career was headed.
Before starting at TI Source, I was already working in the design field, building my experience in commercial interior design while working on retail, hospitality, office, healthcare, and residential projects. I was looking for a company that aligned with my long-term career goals and gave me the opportunity to continue growing in commercial interior design. TI Source stood out because of its collaborative culture, strong reputation, and the variety of projects I could be involved with.
Give us a quick breakdown of what a typical week looks like as the in-house CAD specialist for TI Source and the Sturges family of companies.
There is rarely a "typical" week, and that's one of my favorite parts of the job. Every project brings a new challenge and a chance to think creatively. My week is usually a mix of Matterport scans, CAD drawings, constructions and permit documents, exterior proposals, site development plans, and collaborating with brokers, property managers, and my team.
Walk us through your approach to a new project. What is your process to get a project from concept to completion?
Every project starts with listening. Before I ever open CAD, I want to understand the client's goals, how the space will be used, and what success looks like for them. From there, I gather field measurements, develop the drawings, and collaborate with project managers, brokers, property managers, and contractors to create clear, buildable solutions.
How much creativity goes into a profession that many people assume is purely technical?
Every project is like solving a puzzle—finding creative solutions that are functional, buildable, and make each space work its best.
What's one common misconception people have about CAD or interior designers?
I think the biggest misconception is that we just draw what we're told. In reality, every project takes creativity, collaboration, and problem-solving.
What are your favorite types of projects to work on?
I love concept-driven projects where I get to be involved from the very beginning. There's something really rewarding about watching an idea become a real space.
What advice do you have for new commercial tenants/owners who want to redesign or remodel?
Take the time to understand how a space functions before focusing on how it looks.
Do you have a favorite project you’ve worked on in your time at TI Source/Sturges?
Moving Mountains Recovery has been one of my favorite completed projects, and I'm excited to watch the Coventry Retail Building continue to take shape.
What do you think is the most important soft skill one should have in this field/profession?
Adaptability. Every project is different, so being able to communicate, collaborate, and adjust as things change can make all the difference.
How do you stay on top of the rapidly changing technology in the design, construction, and CRE industries?
By being curious, asking questions, and always being open to learning. I'm involved with IIDA and BOMA, which help me stay connected to industry trends and other professionals. I also learn a lot by collaborating with my team and through hands-on experience.
What trends in design or construction are you most excited about?
I'm fascinated by how regenerative and living materials are shaping the future of design and construction. It's no longer just about selecting finishes—it's about specifying materials that improve performance, reduce environmental impact, and influence how we document projects from the very beginning.
